How we approach solar pv earthing, bonding & surge protection

01

PV protection is part of a system design

Rooftop panels, metal mounting rails, DC cabling, an inverter and the building distribution board create several electrical interfaces. A product labelled “surge protector” does not automatically make this assembly safe. The earthing and bonding arrangement must be consistent with the applicable electrical design, equipment manufacturer and local requirements. We ask whether the system has recently been installed, altered or damaged by a storm, and whether any fault or protective device has operated. Inspecting PV protection is specialist electrical work because hazardous DC voltage may remain in daylight.

02

Bonding, earthing and fault paths

Protective bonding of metal equipment, correct earthing arrangements and appropriate fault protection serve related but different purposes. A loose connection, corroded lug or unsuitable conductor can compromise the intended protective path. We review available electrical drawings, labelled isolators and accessible records to decide what testing is required. Adding a random earth rod or linking conductors without design assessment can create further hazards. Measurements and any changes must be carried out by qualified people using appropriate instruments and isolation methods.

03

Surge protective devices on AC and DC sides

Surges can enter through supply networks, nearby lightning activity and long cable runs. An appropriate protection scheme may include devices at the main electrical board, inverter AC connection and PV DC interfaces, selected for system voltage and installation topology. Indicators on a protective device can help identify certain failures but cannot prove every conductor or cable is undamaged. We assess the installed equipment, replacement compatibility and safe coordination rather than selling a universal “lightning-proof” upgrade. Surge protection reduces risk but does not guarantee immunity from a direct strike.

04

Cape Town documentation and post-fault checks

After suspected storm damage, the priority is safe isolation and identifying which components have been affected. A written service scope should state which protective components are inspected, tested or replaced, and who provides any required electrical certification. Changes to an authorised PV system must be reviewed against the City’s applicable SSEG requirements and inverter approval. We will not bypass a tripping device to keep generation running, nor describe a brief visual check as a complete design certification. A site photograph of the labelled inverter and closed DB is a useful starting point.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

PV stops generating after a storm

Inverter alarms, protective devices and conductors need a systematic safety check; the panels may not be the cause.

Corrosion appears on rooftop connections

Metal compatibility, exposure and protective continuity should be evaluated without disturbing live DC connections.

Surge indicator has changed colour

The relevant device may need replacement, but system compatibility and underlying incident consequences still require assessment.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Share external photos of the inverter and protection enclosures, model labels, fault codes and any existing SSEG documents.

Tell us when a storm or trip occurred and whether the system has been modified. Keep equipment isolated if you suspect dangerous damage, and do not open DC housings.

Quotation scope

What affects the cost and work programme?

Where applicable in the City of Cape Town electricity supply area, new solar PV/battery systems and relevant system changes must follow the City authorisation process. Professional sign-off and suitable approved inverters are important requirements; never activate an unauthorised modified system.

Frequently asked questions

Solar PV Earthing, Bonding & Surge Protection: customer questions

Will surge protection stop all lightning damage?

No. It can mitigate certain overvoltage events as part of a coordinated design but cannot guarantee protection against every lightning event.

Can anyone add an earth rod to a solar system?

No. Earthing changes must follow the applicable system design and be performed by qualified personnel.

Does the inverter being on mean the installation is safe?

Not necessarily. Some protective or bonding defects are not revealed by normal power generation.
